There are over one billion people with disabilities or aging into disabilities worldwide. This number will double by 2050, creating exponential employment opportunities for professionals with advanced training in inclusive and assistive technologies.

The Department of Bioengineering offers undergraduate and graduate coursework focused on research, design and engineering of technology solutions for health, independence, engagement and participation for people of all abilities. Classroom education is paired with hands-on clinical, research and engineering opportunities.

CIDE Presents in New Zealand - Advanced Topics in Seating and Mobility

At this full day Professional Academy course, Kelly Waugh, PT, MAPT,
ATP and Faith Saftler Savage, PT, ATP will share their presentations
from the Oceania Seating Symposium for a day of advanced problem
solving, sharing of ideas and fun.

Beginning with “A Biomechanical Approach to Managing Abnormal
Postures of the Head and Neck”, several common abnormal postures
of the head and neck are analyzed using a biomechanical approach,
including the forward head posture, persistent neck flexion, full neck
extension and lateral tilt of the head.
In “Optimizing Back Support Fit for Optimal Posture”, body shapes and
support needs will be discussed with methodology of assessing back
supports to determine if fit is optimal or if another style back support is

Next “Body Segment Angles: The Key to Understanding Postural
Deviations in the Sagittal Plane” will be discussed, where Ms. Waugh
delves deep into the distinctions between the relative and absolute body
segment angles of the trunk, pelvis and thigh, and how these angles
relate to typical postures of the spine and pelvis such as kyphosis,
lordosis, and posterior or anterior pelvic tilt.
In “Customized Alternative Positioning for 24 Hour Postural
Management”, Ms. Savage will share her experiences designing and
implementing unique custom solutions to 24 hour PCM in institutional
and group home settings in the US.
The day will end with a thorough case study presentation highlighting
the development of a postural alignment plan and the use of seating
simulation in the assessment process.
